And I am knowledgebel in retrospect as well. There was a shift in cinima in the 1980's. Compare the new <i>Planet of the Apes</i> to the old one. Sure it's at oposite ends but it's true. Perhaps if you refered ot the movie(s) you wan to use as a coutner example. West side story also pre-dates the modern movie era, beign writen in 1958. Certantly adaption of clasic lititure can;t change a whole lot of the plot and still be considerd adaptations. That hasn;t started yet. In oriongal plots the trend agaisnt the main characters ding off is well demonstrated I think. There may be exceptions but it is a prety constant theam in modern American moveis.
