FACT: The Blues Brothers, despite being fictional characters created by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd for SNL, actually managed to get a number one hit with their rendition of "Soul Man".

They weren't the only ones to this, though. Even from the start they were opposed to session musicians taking their places and only agreed because the studio wouldn't let the members who didn't already know an instrument take time to learn one so they could release them as soon as possible. As soon as they got some lessons and learned basic techniques they started featuring their own playing and own songs more and more frequently. If I remember right only their first two albums have other musicians playing for them and the second album only has it in a few songs (again at the insistance of the company). Mike Nesmith especially would go on to write some good songs during and after the Monkees.
