Well, PNG still supports the transparent colour, when you're using a palette (256 colours or less) like GIF. It's the alpha transparency that requires a bit more work (namely, using the filter <a href='http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/auth ... loader.asp' target='_blank'>outlined here</a> exclusively).
