Eugene McCarthy, no relation to Joe, was a major figure in 1968. He helped persuade LBJ not to run for re-election, and he ran against Nixon instead. (Boy do we wish he'd won.)<br><br>McCarthy has passed away at 89. My proverbial flag's at half mast.

Incidentally, one of my coolest high school teachers was John McCarthy. I had to be careful about his name.
