This isn't even technically my hometown; it's just where I go to college. "Octan" was the name of the fictional gas station chain in Lego sets; I used the name in another forum where it seemed appropriate for my own reasons. It was only the second message board I ever registered for. The fact that I ended up using it everywhere after that can be blamed on my laziness and lack of originality.

This got me thinking... where did everyone's usernames come from? I know a few, but some just seem totally bizarre. So what's the story behind the name? Inquiring minds want to know!

VisibilityMissing was an error message that the automated weather station at Gambell, Alaska used to play just about every time the barometer made a rapid shift (this was a fairly common occurance). It would dutifully go down its list "Temperature: Missing, Wind: Missing, Visibility: Missing, Altimeter: Missing . . .", even though it was transmitting no useful information. It became the name of one of my computers, and then I decided to use it as a user name back in the dark ages when I was first signing on to message boards and forums.

And, unsurprisingly, I have made no improvements

Back when I first got started with the internet, I was admittingly addicted to Digimon. Therefore,I chose the main character from there and squished the first and last names of the english version together, and as with most people here, was too lazy to change anything

I had a private comic which I did not put online due to copyright problems. In one episode, I wanted to come up with an alphabetical list of animal surnames that would not be recognized by a spellchecker by default. I almost wrote "Flapwell, Henry" but then decided that the list could use another O, so I changed "Henry" to "Thomas." (It seemed quaint, appearing between "Egretta, Moira" and "Giraffalo, Jeanine.") At the time, I figured it was a name for a bird. When I decided to introduce myself here as a flying fox, the name came back to me.
