In case you haven't heard, this will be the first year ever to cycle to the end of the (used) alphabet and come back to A for a hurricane name. Already on the rise is Hurricane Alpha, whose very name suggests an exhaustion of ideas.

Well, the meteorologists use the Greek alphabet to name the storms after they run to the end of the list for the year. It's not really a lack of ideas, but a nod to the fact that the lists of storm names are published and agreed upon years ahead of time.

Hurricane and tropical storm names

Hopefully we won't get very far past alpha . . .

But, for the uninitiated it goes: alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, zeta, eta . . . Greek alphabet

Anyone notice that Oscar shows up in 2006, but Felix doesn't come 'round 'til 2007?

It does speak to soemthing. They also don;t plan for a second alhabet since nobody has ever expected over 26 named storms before any season has ever started. This makes me somewhat speachless. (right.. a polititian speachless. I said almost speachless)
