Hurricane Katrina
Moderator:Æron
Yeah, the hurricane completely broke New Orleans. 80% of the town is flooded. The death toll is soon going to rise astronomically; people's houses went underwater and some who didn't evacuate could not escape. Mississippi also suffered very significant damage, if not even more destructive that Lousiana's case.

I fully believe that the government could be helping out a LOT more than they're currently helping. The death toll may not be stellar high right now, but it WILL be; we still don't know how many people sufficated inside their own homes, or are like, just lying there underwater. For the people who are stranded there, there's hardly ANY food or water for them. I really think THAT should be provided, if nothing else.

I actually think this will end up being WORSE than 9/11. Why? 9/11 was horrible, and thousands of lives were lost. But no homes were lost. THIS, however, might have taken the lives of just as many (if not more, for all we know), AND thousands of homes were destroyed. Not to mention that I truly believe New Orleans will never, ever be the same again. A big economic area to the United States is basically lost, even if just for the time-being. Gas prices are going to rocket up now; many refineries were destroyed. My point is that this is probably going to end up being a TERRIBLE disaster.

Also, it really irks me that possible one of America's greatest tragedies just struck and only James has replied so far.

But 9/11 is much a much catchier phrase than Katrina

Seriously though, I agree with everything Arlo said. A massive hurricane like this has the potential to be a far worse disaster than any terrorist attack like 9/11, yet no one gives a damn.

I'm sorry, but I've spent the last two or three days suffering information overload on Katrina.

* Much of the effected area will not recover for years. Major infrastructure such as roads, interstate highways, electric networks, communications, and sanitation have been totally destroyed by this storm. New Orleans, the center of attention of a lot of the coverage, has currently been flooded to the level of the nearby lakes and is returning to the bog land that it once was.

* The damage and loss of interstate highways will have economic effects on the national scale. I-65 especially is one of the major overland transportation routes across this country.

* The argument about using oil from the strategic oil reserve is moot if refining plants have been inundated or totally destroyed. Part of the reason why the gasoline prices are increasing is that US refining capacity was already low before this storm.

* This storm is an indication of things to come. It fits very well into the model of what will happen as the current global warming trend continues: shorter winters, melting ice pack in the Arctic and Antarctic, and larger and more violent storms. If we are under the delusion that this is a fluke, then we need to reassess our situation. The current US administration has been especially shortsighted in regards to international cooperation around the study of climatic change, and seems to be outright hostile to much of the scientific community.

It is important for the US as a nation to prepare itself for more events like this, and to stop treating each one as an isolated event. We established the Homeland Security agency in response to terrorism, but it may find more use as a disaster coordination and response organization. As far as our national wellbeing is concerned, the climatic changes will be an even greater issue than terrorism in the years to come.

This make a lot of sense since, as seems to be the case in this disaster, armed criminals take advantage of the loss of communication capability. The people cannot contact the police and emergency responders, and the police and emergency responders are having trouble communicating with each other. The most painful aspect of the criminal aspect of this situation is that it is impeding evacuation efforts, as seen with the shots fired at the evacuation helicopter this morning, and the armed bands threatening search and rescue efforts.

I hate to say it, but this is a situation that very much needs military intervention.

There's been an employee for InterNIC running a blog of the situation in New Orleans, which can be found over at http://mgno.com/. It's a very interesting bit of first-hand journalism on the situation, especially with the looting and chaos. (In fact, he refers to it a few times as a Planet Of The Apes sequel.) Sunday is a good place to start and read about all the developments.

I wonder if it'll finally get it's own forum too. I've always wanted a place online where I can talk about O&M.
