Forum Conduct

Postby Tavis » Tue Jul 19, 2005 3:06 am

In the interests of keeping this forum friendly, I have been forced to clarify what it is members should and should not do around here. I really did not think it was necessary to spell things out, but here we are, and I am not happy with this. I guess we can start off with a couple things I mentioned, and let the rest of you add your own commentary.

<QuoteBegin>

Quote: (The Landing Strip)

since this site is open to all ages, I would still like to see people keeping the language clean. Besides that, you are welcome to speak your opinion.<QuoteEnd>

<QuoteEEnd>
It goes without saying that this site is open to people of all ages, even if we don't know how old they are when they come here. Because this is a public site, where people are supposed to be able to talk publicly, it is also a place where people can listen publicly. That said, I ask that members try to avoid language and subject matter not normally allowed in newspapers or on broadcast TV at prime time. This is rather lax, and won't be enforced strictly, but if you can't write a paragraph or sentence without using an expletive, you need to work harder on your verbal skills.

<QuoteBegin>

Quote: (The Landing Strip)

Good conduct is important for keeping a healthy community, so I insist that you do not be rude and offensive to other members (flaming) or be excessively trying to sell stuff or otherwise advertising (spamming) on the boards.<QuoteEnd>

<QuoteEEnd>
What part of no flaming do you people understand? If you have a problem with another member, send a PM and work it out or report him or her to the mods. Don't turn a careless post into a fight that rips apart a topic. Let us know so we can handle it. You might not see us online all the time, but we can be very responsive once something is brought to our attention.

And of course spamming.. bad. Don't be like that pyramid scheme poster.

Finally, common sense. I know you folks have it; you had enough to come here. <emo><endemo> You know what hurts others here and what hurts you. Please don't do stuff like spoiling a good movie or book or trash talking one's opinions just because you disagree. If you have a valid complaint, take the time to voice a well thought-out reply rather than an attack.

I sincerely hope that we can work things out, and if we can't, to accept it and still keep the good things going in here.

Mod Note: I am not exactly in the best of moods right now, and I intend to edit this post when I have settled down a bit. I do not wish to single out anyone in particular, despite references in here to the contrary. It is only there because there was an instance that upset members that was not considered as big a deal as it turned out to be by even myself at first.

Haven't been around much, just want to add my support to this. Alot of forums I used to frequent were destroyed, essentially, by lax moderation, acceptance of flames, and ignoring stuff like that.

Unless, wait... it wasn't anything I did, was it? Hmm... I didn't like that one guys really super huge massive sig-banner, and I guess I could have noticed that via a PM, but... meh. Didnt' really care, really, just tough to see on my tiny monitor. To that dude, I forget which thread it is: Meh, I don't care. Others might, but I don't really post here enough for my opinion to count all that much, so whatever.

Anyway, this is one of the better forums I've been in, and I really hope it can stay that way, and from what I've seen it really shouldn't be a problem. You're all good people far as I can tell, I'm proud to be here.

I've been around more than long enough to know that this is a great place... Most of our flaming (in a literal sense of actually setting them on fire) is accepted as a random act of insanity, and we as a general rule of thumb keep ourselves self-moderated enough to stay out of trouble with each other.

Sure, I've had a few beefs with the place, but then again everyone who's been around this forum often enough probably has had one at some point. Though I don't know a lot about the more recent happenings due to my new career, I've called this place a home ever since I found it one fateful day. I hope it stays that way and isn't ruined by a bunch of newbies with zero respect for the rules that we do have.

Even if this place got taken out by some newbie, I'm sure someone would rise up and make a new forum... I know a few people (myself included) that are quite capable of doing so....

Well over-moderation is a social killer, but as long as I've been here it seemed like a moot point.

No one has acted stupid, no one has flamed, no one has insulted anyone...That was until Harry bloody Potter.

I take it this is why this is here?

I must acknowledge that I cast the first flame, assuming that deliberately making people unhappy doesn't count. Anyway, I certainly had a substantial part in it, and I expect not to do it again. Of course, when DCS himself says he'd've kicked someone's ---, it's hard to say what won't do.

My apologies, Tavis and the board.

I will be writing a longer response here soon, but I need to point out that the forums are definitely not the right place for pointing fingers or other inflammatory writing.

Especially in a thread specifically geared to create community harmony.

In the need to act, I feel I have been overreacting about this community. Upon rereading some stuff I thought was relatively inflammatory in the forum, I noticed that the members still maintained some civility, indicating a loss of respect, the occasional mild insult or 'zing', or describing the level of your anger, but everyone has stopped short of actively threatening to go out and beat someone up or to act on some cruel plot.

As for my comment, I thought it sounded catchy, and um... it performed its intended purpose since all of you DID pay attention to it.

By the way, whenever something does happen and a mod is called over to assist, it's usually only one person that reports it (and almost never the same person). You don't have to be afraid to use the report tool.

Rooster and Tom Flapwell (and other newer members): We've had disturbances here before, but I'm thankful that they are very rare. We spent most of the first year without incident, with I'd say less than four times where members were noticibly bothered by some heated debate or bad action. As far as spammers/trolls go, we've only had two recognized cases, and the community was neither gullible nor seriously bothered enough for them to cause any problems. The community responses to those make me smile.

We've had a few members cause problems at times too, but usually not enough to drown out a topic, and occasionally it has led to the announcement of some member taking a break from this place to cool off or to avoid confrontation. Those are the times I feel sad about the community, and I am hoping that we can welcome those members back someday.

I feel really bad about neglecting this place as I've said before, but it's because I can't stick around for very long at a time. I have no control who uses this computer for one thing, and have no power over who does either. I have a pretty full on and exhausting career, and on the weekends there's just too much to do.

I know there's really no excuse for the neglect and I don't like it, but I hope you guys can understand my situation. I really do want to keep maintaining this place and I want it to stay as nice as it is, this place does rock. I sort of feel like I may have made people stop coming because I imagine it seems like I've lost enthuisasm about this place. Sorry if I have to everyone. I hope you guys understand now, atleast a little.

BTW, Tavis and other mods, you guys are awesome! You don't have to view it as being unenthused about the forum. Rather... you could look at it as a sort of laissez faire style of managment

Yeah, exactly... Though admittingly it's nice to have at least one member with Admin powers around that's a known regular...

Now I'm not pointing any fingers at anyone, but maybe that's a partial cause of the problem eith our newbies, and even some of the more well-known people here (again, no names), there's nobody really around often enough with enough power to deal with potential trouble-makers if and when they show themselves.

I mean, we still don't really have a big enough problem to really warrant it, but, it's just something to consider as a suggestion. Also, maybe another regular member could be helpful and step up for a moderation position -- like Zaaphod for example -- someone who visits and posts on the forums frequently, and shows an overall good general level of maturity, even in the presence of all the randomness that ensues here.

Truth be told, I think out of the three moderators we do have, only one visits with any sort of frequency nowadays. That leaves a whole lotta burden on just one person....

This place, as I am seeing it currently, doesn't really NEED anymore than one mod/admin, compared to other forums I've been to.
Who sleeps shall awake, greeting the shadows from the sun
Who sleeps shall awake, looking through the window of our lives
Waiting for the moment to arrive...
Show us the silence in the rise,
So that we may someday understand...

I don't personally see enough reason to have another mod, though I do miss Sabre. Anyone know what's happened to him?

Yeah, I know what you mean.

Some people get carried away, and can't follow the PG-13 rule very well. I'm usually very subtile when I make a sexual inuendo, but others aren't always so.

The strongest words I tend to use are "biggot" (someone who practices biggotry, or prejudice for the sole purpose of making oneself feel superior) and sucks (which although of profain origine, has become an excepted word.

I still rarely use these words too.

I have once or twice, in anger used the word "idiot" which I myself find derogatory. I have also used other similar words in anger. However, I know nobodies perfect, and all of us have done this here, and I forgive the others that have too.
