Think I've heard this one before. He is the world's shortest man. The horizontal markings are when he measured himself, and someone(his roommate perhaps) has fooled into thinking he was growing, and therefore would lose his title of "World's Shortest Man", so in despair he killed himself.

Close enough. The man was a professional midget. As in, a vertically challenged person who participates in circus performances. He used this board to measure his height, to make sure he didn't grow too tall. Then, a colleague, jealous of his success, started gradually shortening the board, convincing the man he was growing taller. Thus, his carrer was ruined.

okay....hope I get this right...

a gunman takes a family hostage after a botched robbery. He has the 4 hostages lie on the floor. Soon the police arrive and negotiations start. Shortly thereafter, the gunman agrees to let the hostages go, in exchange for a bulletproof vest, and an escape car. The 2 mothers, the grandmother, and the 2 daughters soon walk out of the building unharmed. How is that possible?

It's four, remember?
Ah, perhaps one was being carried one out? And technically, I think it would add up to four, they aren't dead in the mother's womb, you know. =P
