"Roger Tyson was being pursued through time by a motorcycle-riding rutabega-like alien in a world where ages millions of years apart have been combined in an insane smorgasbord of aeons. And he must somehow convince superbeings from the distant future that the human race is not a horde of vermin who should be wiped from the pages of history...." --Kieth Laumer

rutabegas are the future rulers of Earth.

No, no, no, rutabegas are the older cooler brother of swedes.
A long time ago, King Kumquat of Scandinavia, the legendary monarch who united vegetables and fruits, had two sons - Swede, and rutabega. Whilst rutabega could be frequently found humbly accepting the gratitudes/applause of the general floral population, Swede would devise plans to secretly imprison, torture, mash and sell the remains of his brother to the populace in canned form. However his ploy was discovered before it was too late and was banished from Vegetatia (as Scandinavia was refered to as then). rutabega later became king and was much loved etc. etc.
However followers of both sons soon arose among other vegetables and through the centuries there followed sporadic battles between the two factions. King rutabega never allowed such violence to fellow vegetable folk and it was after his untimely death that the skirmishes and battles gained prominence. Both sides were secretly funded by like minded ministers of the High Order of Vegetables and Fruits. As we entered the 20th century the Swede and rutabega causes were embraced by a handful of humans and so the war of the benevolent rutabegas against the totalitarian Swedes continue.

I reserve the right to be as silly as i want in this topic.

The end is nigh!
No, it was Swede who was going to put rutabega in tins. In fact he held the great genius Tomato Da Vinci hostage in his palace basement to build a canning contraption and several torture devices. Da Vinci secretly built a crossbow from the leftover materials he used in his inventions to shoot a message into the courtyard of the palace, where a helpful vegetable or fruit would report his call for help to the authorities. His canning machine was centuries ahead of its time, though never used.
