Lincoln only took the slavery platform when he realized that the civil war wasn't going anywhere. he didn't even really emancipate black people with his first emancipation proclamation

Regardless of what Lincoln said, the south still threatened to (and did) secede if he was elected because they were scared of having their slaves taken away. The war was caused by the slavery issue.

the south started to secede BEFORE Lincoln was president. abolition was an indirect cause, it stemmed out of antifederalism in general. Lincoln didn't consider legal abolition of slavery across the board, he decided to just have all new states to join the union not have slavery. in all the old states, slavery was perfectly legal from a federal viewpoint.
