Is it really bad that they updated the game? Now characters are only like ten years out of date with popular culture rather then 60
Updating things in general certainly isn't bad by definition but in this specific case I claim it is. The "out-of-date-ness" of it has always, at least to me, been one of the game's charms.

Yeah... the characters, setting, and theme of the game have always been old by the standards of the culture it was in. That was kind of always the point; it's like an old-timey mystery. The kind where the detective is neither affiliated with the police nor named Spade and gathers the suspects together to tell the story, mock-accusing each of them before revealing the real culprit.

If anything I'm surprised they haven't decided to discontinue the game due to backlash from people concerned that a murder mystery is an inappropriate theme for a "family board game."

Overall, I suppose this was a fiscally intelligent move. Whether the update lasts remains to be seen.

You like the retro quality? The first Clue set I played with came in a box adorned with photos that looked like they were taken in the early '60s.

It wasn't long ago (2002) that a sequel to 13 Dead End Drive came out. In that franchise, the object is to kill everyone who stands between you and the entirety of a dead aristocrat's fortune. TV commercials made it look less macabre than wacky.
