I HATE it when people are like that... think they are cool, act like idiots towards you when others are around, and become a fair weather friend. thats what avery was, and while I still liked him as a character, I always had that small grudge I held against such fair weather frends in grade school.

Fair weather friends...that's every single person I knew in middle school! Once I got to high school, I stopped hanging out with everyone I knew in middle school and made new friends with people from other schools because they weren't such [insert (in)appropriate word here]. People like Avery always did get on my nerves, and I knew a ton of them. I never liked Avery that much, and it's probably for those reasons.

All of my friends were sort of geeky and/or didn't care what people thought about them. It owned.
Who sleeps shall awake, greeting the shadows from the sun
Who sleeps shall awake, looking through the window of our lives
Waiting for the moment to arrive...
Show us the silence in the rise,
So that we may someday understand...

That's where I think real coolness comes from. Having enough confidence about yourself to not care about how other people measure your coolness is good. All that matters is that you fit your own ideal, or if it's impossible, that you find an ideal that fits you..

That yo-yo gag reminds me of Charlie Brown's issues with his kites.
Oh yeah, cool is defined as being calm and in control of your emotions and facial expressions. And by David's definition, being yourself.

Actually maybe it's a mistake by David or a delibarate show of Avery's inabilities but there's a little glitch in this strip. Avery's line in the last panel is somewhat wrong i feel, Ozy clearly isn't (or wasn't) as surprised as him. If it's the latter reason in my first sentence then it's ok.

Avery's inabilities.

Millie was surprised, wasn't she? Well, she would have been if she hadn't been "tied up" at the moment.

(top that, tavis!)

I wonder, then, if that background is a subtle hint of how easily Avery's current line of reasoning can yo-yo as well.
