I am unashamedly a big eater of meat. Mainly I just really like meat. Also If I turned vegetarian I'ld have such limited options. Before vegetarians get huffy, it's NOt because there's not a lot of Vegetarian options, but because The main ones for replacing the nutrients, like Tofu, Lentils and Mushrooms, I just don't like.

I don't have any problems with the ooh, eating animals part of it. not for the regular meats, beef, pork, turkey etc. I thought I might actually, but then I started my current job, at a meatworks. I'm in the lab and have to go all over the place to get samples, I see the live animals, I see the dead animals, straight after the killing, before they are de-headed and skinned.
(I don't actually see them being killed, though, safety issues and plant design stop me. There's corners between the killing platforms and the rest of the slaughter floor, had to put them in to have the animals facing Mecca at slaughter, to be able to sell to the Arab world)

Hell I hear the cattle mooing from the slaughter floor, it just doesn't really bother me. Sometimes I feel like it should.
LLEWELLYN: And surely you've noticed that a great deal of what I do is extremely strange.

If you've done things right, people won't be sure if you've done anything at all.

Wanna be grossed out by eating meat? Read "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair. Granted it was written around the turn of the century so it's outdated and meat packing standards have since been rigorously tightened, but it'll still churn your stomach a bit. Had to read excerpts from it for history. Very entertaining to hear how poisoned rats (and much more) would just get tossed into the sausage processor and mixed in. How did we not poison ourselves to death back then?

I agree about the Jungle. I've red exceprts too. There still are problems today but not as much. I'me sure people were poisened but not enoguh to kill of humanioty. The percentagwe rate has gone down and htus increased life expentancy. People still die from bad meat packing procedures. Just less today.

::looks over old history notes:: Well, we did just about kill off our own soldiers in the Spanish-American War since we supplied then will all the rejected food (the food that was even worse than the rat sausage!), so we did a pretty good job of shooting ourselves in the foot with that.

Given todays food standards, we're pretty darn safe. It's like hot dogs--just don't ask what's in them and you're better off.

The food standards are pretty high nowadays. I should know I have to do all the bloody tests!

I'm not allowed to go outside in my 'whites', my work pajama style uniform, in case anything gets on them from outside. About 10 years ago enclosed walkways were put up all over the plant so we needn't ever go outside.

Added to that I'm forever putting on fresh aprons and changing my coat. I'm not even allowed to wear the same things in the beef and lamb sections of the plant.
And no poisoned rats

Heh, I also see what get's sent to McD's for the patties. You might not believe it but the meat we send them is pretty good stuff.

But there are still ocosalanly problems. I was reading about how a meat packing plant released e-coli into the public and how the compony handleled it. A few people died. It was for some class I belive. OR on my own. I can't remmeber.

So the beaf you send them is good but what about after they get it. *tsk's and snaps my fingures while pointing and winking*
