Why is it that unrelated older men call boys "son" but nobody calls girls "daughter" except maybe parents? I blame linguistic laziness.

I know I'm late on this, but people were discussing the meaning of Mu-Nan's name. I think it must consist of mu, the non-answer of Zen Buddhism, and NaN, the non-answer of computer processors. He hasn't shown himself to be particularly modern, but maybe he has a hidden geeky side?

It could be that he refers to Ozy as "son" because of the whole zen Buddhism thing. He appears to be a monk after all.
