It has pretty much the same type of appeal as other consoles. Just with more Mario et al.The game cube is a strange beast that I never understood the appeal of, but that's irrelevant.
I don't own any, I just play when people have them around. Though for some inexplicable reason, I can beat everyone at Super Mario Strikers. (Must be all that practise ages ago on hockey games)
Nintendo is generally aimed at a younger audience, as is evident with the game selection. In the previous generation, PS2 pretty much had a stranglehold on the older age bracket, and with Xbox attempting to crack that market, I think Nintendo decided to pursue the younger market.

OK. pants it. I lied. It's drum and bass. What you gonna do?

Actually, that's not completely true.Nintendo is generally aimed at a younger audience, as is evident with the game selection. Yes, Nintendo did focus on a younger market (but of course, that's where the money is), but now they are planning on coming out with one of the few "A" rated games in history. Believe it or not, Nintendo's games are actually made for a teenage and party-loving audience. Nintendo specializes in games that are fun and exciting for a group of people, but sadly, this isn't really appreciated in America at all, unlike the Japanese who usually partake in this sort of activity.
Playstation is focused on a overall audience, with its wide variety of kiddy, adventure, and mature games.
Xbox cracked the market a lot earlier than you're making it seem. Utilizing their first games for the system, they created a rooting for themselves in an older market (Halo anyone?). Because of this rooting, Xbox is doing better than both Playstation and Nintendo.

I was mostly focusing on the Gamecube there. They're definitely shooting for every market, and being successful, with both the Wii and the DS. Even in the past, they have had roots in the older audience, heck one of my favourite games of all time is Goldeneye for the N64.
However, I think most will agree that the majority of previous generation games that appealed to older audiences were largely held by PS2 and Xbox, especially the former. Xbox I'd say took a longer time to catch on thanks to some hardware trouble, complaints about the awkward controllers, etc, wheras the PS2 was already building on proven technology from the PS1, and the fact that most of the titles people already owned for the PS1 could be played on PS2 was just an added bonus.
Current gen, yes, the 360 is the definite leader, and not just because it was released much earlier than the other two consoles. While the Wii is closing in fast on the 360 in units sold, and will likely catch the 360 in the near future, it lacks the big titles that will draw more serious gamers, but unlike the gamecube, it does have more games that aim at an older audience. However, the 360 I find appeals more to more serious users with it's more popular and intense titles, and it's integration ability with Windows Media Center and Vista.
The PS3 is just a massive failure.

My personal favorite company is Nintendo, but I like some Xbox games like Halo and the like. I don't like Sony nearly as much, mostly because I was practically raised with Nintendo games, but the PS2 had WAY to many cheap games, the only series I really liked that was on a Sony system(systems in FF's case) are Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Destroy all Humans, and Grand Theft Auto. But now Final Fantasy games are appearing on other consoles, a Kingdom Hearts and Destroy all Humans game are both having a game being made for the Wii, and Grand Theft Auto games have been ported to the computer(I also saw GTA:SA for Xbox at a Walmart).... I really have no need for Sony, the only reason I would get a Playstation 2 would be if I had a lot of extra money,(I don't) and a copy of FF7(don't have that either).
On the subject of mature games, Sony and Xbox both have Nintendo beat, the only mature games I can think of for Gamecube would be a couple Resident Evils, a few Prince of Persia games, and that's all I can think of right now. Xbox and Sony had Halo, GTA, and too many other mature games to put here. While obviosuly a game dosn't have to be rated M to be good,(Super Smash Bros., Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy dosn't have a M rated title, though RE:4 was awesome) it's sometimes fun to be needlesly violent.
On sales, I'm pretty sure Xbox 360 and Wii are ahead of the PS3, with Xbox 360 in the lead,(but for how much longer? Only time will tell) with Wii close behind and gaining with it's family-friendly titles. Xbox 360 does have Gears of War, Unreal Tournament 3, which is coming out soon,(actually, so does PS3) Halo 3, and Guitar Hero. Halo 3 and UT 3 will probaly last a long time though UT 3 is coming out for the computer as well, as Halo 3 probaly will too eventually. Nintendo has the RE 4 remake, Manhunt 2 (I think that's what PR is refering to), and Metroid Prime 3(havn't played yet, but looks VERY promising).
The PS3 isn't exactly BAD, the hardware is amazing, but of course, there's the price tag, games are a bit more costly, and if they want the PS3 to be more succesfull, they need to make some major changes, and currently, I don't see much hope.
(Side note: I think that's my longest post yet....

EDIT:How did this get away from RKN's picture?
EDIT 2:Which is awesome by the way!
