Some odd idea for a comic

Postby Kyler Thatch » Fri Jul 13, 2007 7:43 am

I wasn't sure whether this actually deserved a new topic, or if I should just chuck in in the DOODLE-MANIA thread... Anyways, quite some time ago, I decided I'd start doing a comic. I just needed a good story, and enough artistic skill to pull it off.

What I have in mind right now is about a college-based theater group (or whatever you call those). They're not all theater majors, some of them just do this as a hobby of sorts. I was planning for it to be more like a series of shorter stories, each focusing on one or two characters at a time, revealing a little something about them and how they relate to the other characters.

And speaking of characters...

Image
This is Arthur. He wasn't really that much into acting, until his roommate Ben convinced him to audition for a part in a play. After that, he thought it seemed enjoyable enough that he decided he'd join in the theater group, just for fun. He's a little unpredictable, partly because he sometimes acts like a raving lunatic, partly because all of a sudden he can become unusually silent. But he's a lively sort of person, most of the time.

This is Benjamin, Arthur's roommate. Just call him Ben. He's one of the characters who are actually planning to pursue an acting career. The more serious of the two, but tends to wax poetic when he's feeling that emotional. Once he has a goal in mind, he's more than ready to do whatever it takes to get things done. The downside is, he tends to keep going even if what he's doing has already proved to be pointless.

I have more characters in mind, but I'll leave that for later. Besides, I want to see if my idea for a comic could actually work before putting too much effort into designing the characters.

Well. What do you think?

I'd been thinking before that a comic with a theatrical focus (other than the whacked-out "Pibgorn") would be good to have, but I lacked the experience to take on the task myself. So please, go ahead, Kyler.

That sounds like a description of me. :O

I think there's a good chance I would read it and enjoy it.

I think you've got a good idea to run with here. You should definitely pursue this one.

Thanks for the replies! Time to take my storytelling skills out of the drawer then, and start figuring out what to do with these people...

Image
This is Abigail. Always looking on the bright side, and tends to influence other people to do the same. She has an odd sort of fondness for pretty dresses, though she's more of the athletic sort. She practices parkour on a regular basis. Yes, that was her jumping between rooftops just now.

Image
This is Matilda. The way she's often tucked in a corner reading a book, people are wondering how she got into acting. She's actually pretty good at it, though. She can easily figure out a character's personality based on the script, to the point where the others are asking for her help on how exactly a particular line is supposed to be spoken. She's never sure about how to deal with people, though, which is why she tends to isolate herself so much.

I really like Matilda. She seems like my kind of a character. That design looks like it would fit her well.

I think that so far it seems quite cool dude. But one thing though, it seems to me that there are quite a few "room-mate" sort of strips knocking about. Maybe another angle, or something?

Then again, there are also a lot of non-anthro strips around with foxes, but that didn't stop this hipocrit, so draw away! :wag:

Oh, but the roommate thing is mostly just backstory for Arthur and Ben, and sort of gives me an excuse to throw an engineering major into the mix. I wouldn't expect it to be relevant information for most of the plotlines anyways.
