Actually, it is according to dictionary.com

And Doog, there are rules in English, they just differ depending on the language of origin. Words with the same origin follow the same rules.
For that matter, Calvinball has rules. And like the ones in English, they keep changing!

I did a quick check. It doesn't appear in the Cambridge Dictionaries Online, but does appear in dictionary.com and Merrian-Webster. It's like with the verb 'transition', apparently it's a word in American English, but not British English.

Basketball teams frequently score points in transition. :P
That's using it as a noun, not a verb.

What I mean to say is that english became a language through people introducing their words into it, it never had any one specific basis. Early english didn't even have proper spellings for words
Actually I'm fairly sure the different spellings came from regional differences before everything became organised nationwide when mass printing started.

This thread has been highjacked by an English lesson.

Dunno, man. The thing about Shakespeare, at least the way I heard it, is that even he didn't spell it the same every time he wrote it.

I remember reading that until William Caxton's printing took off there were regional differences, even down to the words used for ordinary things. For example eggs were called eyen in the southeast.

There's a theory that the word cockney came from a composite of cock and eyen. A cock's egg was regarded as something unnatural and weird. So, if true, the word is actually an insult.

This thread has been highjacked by an English lesson.
As such, I feel it necessary to point out that "highjack" is incorrect, according to Oxford.

As for the spelling thing, I think Doog's right, that English didn't have official spellings until a few centuries ago. Not that that makes it any less important.

According to other sources (dictionary.com, specifically), highjack is a valid variant of hijack. I didn't know that until just now. Interesting.

I don't accept dictionary.com as a valid dictionary, as explained in an earlier post.
