Shut Down Day

Postby Tabris_The_17th » Sat Mar 03, 2007 5:32 pm

Anybody hear about this? I found the link through a video on YouTube I was sent called "Alternative uses for Your Laptop."

http://shutdownday.org/

Calling in an experiment seems kind of silly, doesn't it? I mean, it doesn't appear they're measuring much beyond "Yeah, I'll do it" or "Nope, can't do it." I just love the part in the opening that says: "The idea behind the experiment is to find out how many people can go without a computer for one whole day, and what will happen if we all participate!" .........what will happen is your computer wont be on and some websites wont get as many hits as they usually do....sorry to spoil the surprise.

Getting people away from their computers once and a while is a good principle, don't get me wrong. There's a lot of life out there. This just seems a little too overly dramatized to me. I mean, I already spend days where I never turn on my computer and I haven't had a break down :P

I can easily go a day or even a week without a computer. Longer than that would be difficult, but possible. The only thing that would keep me from doing that would be homework assignments that have to be typed, because I don't own a typewriter.

I could. I wouldn't really want to. So screw that.

I can easily survive without a computer so long as there's something to do around. The only problem is that I live in away from town, so none of my friends are nearby. When I'm off doing something, I never really miss using a computer, but if I'm at home, it's the only thing there is to do apart from some sort of work.

Well you guys better hope I don't do it or DC will go away for a day ;-)

Seriously even if I were to take my servers out of the picture I don't think I could do it. I mean I work on computers, I have to use them at school, and I would go completely bonkers at my house.

Still a cool idea, interesting social experiment for sure.
cheers.....

What would be more interesting is if it were for a whole month.

A computer famine.

I'll be flying up to Brisbane on that day, so I'll be going the vast majority of it without computer usage.

I can ignore my machines for 24 hours, but I prefer not to.

Computers feed my insomnia habit.

Meh, I can exist without computers easy mcpeasy. I'd just watch TV or play my Playstation instead.
