[SPOILER]The joke is that somehow the question is 6*9, leading to the remark "I knew there was something fundamentally wrong with the universe."

Of course, mathematicians have pointed out that in Base 13(?), 6*9=42, but Douglas Adams denied that that coincidence was part of the stories.
