(to use BSP's logic) Thats another argument for existance, although i can't remembr the philosophical group that came up with it... but their belief was that simply by experiencing pain and pleasure, we exist, and that no matter what we as people should seek out the most pleasurable experiences every waking moment of the day. That sounds pretty selfish and somewhat disturbing to me.

yes, but there was a greedy mentality behind it. I don't know how much in life you desire (except world domination, but that in and of itself is a neccesity for all of us!) so i can't say that what your asking for is more than the weight of the population of china in gold, or something. I go with what you say, though, bsp.

Well, first off, existence is what exists, so anything that can be proven to exists is part of existence. The phrase "I think, therefore I am" states that by having a thought, a person confirms that they exist. If said person didn't exist, then they couldn't have been around to think the thought - or to notice than it was thought, either.

Commonly, this question tries to answer "how can I be sure the real (physical) world exists?" generally outside of the fact that it is perceived. While it is true that people can perceive thinks that are not "real," such experiences, like dreams and hallusionations, have a (dare I say it?) dreamlike quality to them. They just don't seem real, and there are inconsistencies in them. The best proof that a physical world exists outside our perceptions is that it is, as someone has already stated, consistent with itself and seems to follow a set of rules, ignorant of them as we may be.

I'm not to sure about what to say of things that exist "outside" the universe. While minds and thoughts aren't physical objects, there needs to be a physical object on which the thought made, such as a brain. While it would be easy to say that something outside of the universe - having neither physical body, nor dimentions, nor time - is the best definition of an "idea," (and thus all thing existing outside the universe are only ideas/concepts) I believe that I am wise enough not to discount the possibility that there may be stuff out there, to use the phrase.

Though if you're looking for the meaning of life, you'll need to wait for another post... or perhaps another topic. (Random Philosophy/Physics 4?)

I found this in a Sunday comic strip back a couple of weeks ago...

Quote:

Money = root (Evil) = (Evil)^1/2

1
Evil = -------
Good

Good = Infinity

1
Evil = ------- = 0
infinity

Therefore,

Money = root (Evil) = root (0) = (0)^1/2

So,

Money = 0
