I'd say scanners aren't that expensive but, maddeningly, they are nowadays. Used to be you could get a flatbed for under $60 at Best Buy; now you can't even get 'em without a built-in printer or a max. resolution over 4000 (both of which, of course, jack up the price quite a bit).
It used to be you could get one for CA$30 (that was the cost of mine), even. Way back when that was US$20...

But yeah, I see what you mean (CA$70 refurbished, after discount!? Yes, that's the cheapest I can find).
