Another idea is that we could get a forum on the Talk About Comics forum. I'm fairly sure that if I asked, Joey Manley would be happy to give us a space. Depends on what you think about it, though.

Cameron is awesome because:
-Because he has an artistic style that is both complex and minimalist. This is profound!
-He once drew me as a roadrunner. It was an actual honest to god feral roadrunner, but a roadrunner nonetheless!
-He lives in Idaho among the wilderness and stuff and I envy him for that. 3:
-He is probably one of the most personable artists on here.
-I think he's the only one of us on here who drew a fanart that made it as a guest strip on O&M. This is an accomplishment!
You guys can see what TAC is here. As you can see, it's a bit crowded, but we could get our own section-here are a bunch of webcomics groups there already-and it would be free and we wouldn't have to worry about technical details. Just a thought. I voted for getting a simple website, because that just seems best to me, but it may not be doable.

Or what we could do is we could cobble together a "site" out of (good) free services. Create a blog for all of us on Blogger, get a forum on TAC, and of course we already have our actual comics hosted on tons of different places--and then just create a simple web page as a public directory to all this and host it on a free file server like HotLinkFiles. It's a bit messy, but it would work, and it would be free, and we wouldn't be having to worry about server issues or involved programming. But then, maybe that's not actually something that's a problem.

The problem with free hosting is that it sucks. Miserably. Restrictive quotas, imposed ads, and other crap makes this a horrible option for anything except a glorified Myspace-style page. Some don't even allow you to access the site via FTP [cough]GEOCITIES[cough].
There've been two offers of hosting for this project so far. Jent offered to host it on the same server as DC, and I offered to host it on the same server as House Rules. I don't know about Jent's available services, but I can offer practically unlimited bandwidth and HD space, support for PHP, ASP, and CGI/Perl, and DNS/email hosting for a domain (if desired). Either way, you'd have a pretty dedicated administrator (or team of admins) managing the server, and stable service for as long as you needed it.
As far as software, it's really not hard to build something that's easy to use and update, and I believe Octan already volunteered to set it up. Free forum platforms are easy to come by (phpBB and Simple Machines are two popular options), as well as content managers, galleries, and other goodies.
And the #1 advantage to a centralized system is that you get a coherant community that won't fall apart when one of the many free hosts flakes out, hiccups, runs over quota, or has an account shut down for no reason.

There is Revora hosting (game-oriented but also offers misc hosting) but it's mostly network-based similar to Keenspot, Comicgen and the likes. And as a free hostee you have to use the network's forums.

Let's see- as I see it, we just need a few basic things:
*A front page, with:
*A blog that any member of the group can post on
*A list of links to comics and other associated sites
*Some cool graphics (I can do that)
and
*A forum.
Let's start taking bids now. The person with the lowest bid (ie, for free) will get the contract.
other possiblilities:
*A gallery?
*A store? (lulu or cafepress maybe?)
*Some devices for cross-site and extra-site promotion?

"Cynicalists" sounds cute, but it doesn't really say much. Besides, we're actually some of the less cynical people out there. Any ideas?

I unfortunately have too much on my plate to build the whole thing, but I can offer suggestions, and I'll happily host it for free, along with the other O&M-related sites at Lupinia.
However, due to the fact that I'm at my limits with my current shared-hosting account (I don't have any available databases or subdomains), this will have to wait until I get my co-located server up and running. The "official" go-live date is September 1, but I plan to have the server in the hosting facility in July. So, if you guys seriously want me to host it, I'll set you up with space as soon as I'm able to.
Oh, and it looks like the middle three options are essentially wanting the same thing, in varying degrees of effort

I can do the forum. I have experience installing and setting up software such as PHPBB. Count me in for graphics as well if you can't handle everything Cameron (want examples? Ask! ).
