People would call up tobacco stores and ask if they had "Prince Albert in a can" (Prince Albert was a brand of tobacco, and could be purchased by the can). If the store owner said "yes," the caller would say "Well, you had better let him out, he might suffocate!"<br><br>Corny, yes, but it's a very old joke that just somehow perpetuated. Kinda like the whole "is your refrigerator running" joke.

"Prince Albert in a Can" is a kind of tuna.<br>People as a joke would call stores and ask them for the tuna product. Then they would go "well, you'd better let him out, he's got a country to run!" or something like that.<br><br>Edit: oops... I missed.<br><br>Huh. I always thought it was a brand of tuna.

The joke more than likely originated in the Victorian age where Prince Albert was the husband to Britain's Queen Victoria before dying early on. If not then the joke of "he's got a country to run" definitely did.

Funny thing is...I saw this exact same gag in a comic called "Natural Selection." This guy has Prince Albert in an oversized canning jar (not really a can, per se) and says something into the phone like that. Now, I guess the question is, who is copying whom?
