We've had that in the UK for ages now, but you still have to get planning permission before you can buy up the houses and people can still take the companies/council/local government to court to get an injunction against them having their property bought, maybe it will work the same in the US.

However, if people refuse to sell their property, the commercial developer can now go to the local government and say "Hey, I'll give you $*******.** for these people's houses, and I'll bring in all this nice tax revenue. Oh, and here's some funding for your next campaign". The local government says "Oooooo, sweet! Make yourself at home!", then the government goes to the homeowners in question and says "Your house is going to be a shopping mall, here's what the developers say it's worth, and we won't bother to do a real appraisal even though they valued it less than your car. Have a nice life in the slum apartments, if you can even afford those! But look on the bright side, there'll be yet another mall here!"

We had a pub in our town that refused to close down in order to build a roundabout. This traffic feature was (said the council) desperatly needed to releive the congestion in our small town from people travelling the only direct road between the Stoke and Manchester.

The pub appealed to the council who said that it was for the "greater good" or something. In the end, they just built the roundabout behind the pub, leaving it stranded inbetween two major roads on either side and a large traffic feature to the rear.

The whole thing went on for about 6 months, and the great irony is that the pub has better buisness now as everyone for 20 miles of our town has heard of the place, and the roundabout did absolutly nothing to ease congestion. In fact, the contracting company screwed us, and the tarmac had to be replaced by professionals three months later.

Who proposed something like this? This is really awful I don't want to think what would happen to my little town. We already have a Wal-Mart, a Weis Market, and a Shoprite in the same general area. We used to have a Rockaway Sales too but it went out of business after Wal-Mart came in . We used to have a book store to . But that went out of business. Its all because of bigger companies herding out the smaller companies. this new law will make more things like Wal-Mart being built and thats not good for small businesses. Though I wouldn't want a Barnes & Noble here even though it is a book store. One thing that towns need to do is stop selling property to big business and use it for the well fare for the town. My town has a downtown but its basically deserted with ONE deli that no one really goes to except for a soda and chips. Sure we have a very good japanese restraunt that attracts people from the rich area of Sparta (its a town in Sussex county in NJ) but we have nothing that helps the town because the Wok n' Sushi is a private business. Now imagine if my town were to use some of those buildings in the downtown to help make small businesses like antique shops and small coffe shops (but not starbucks) that serve good quality coffee and maybe pastries then the town makes money as well as the business owner. With this new law or what ever its called harbors in bigger businesses that destrsoy the smaller ones. Personally I do not like this idea and I can't believe they passed it. America is going downhill and I wish it wasn't. its funny i was listening to Dead Kennedey's Bedtime for Democracy which was from '86 and I realized that what they were talking about is true even 19 YEARS later. Its just plain sad. I love the country but I have to admit its getting real bad here.
