I can't explain why, but 'family obligations' as one of the grievances strikes me as amusing and telling.

That said, I really like the actual picture. That's pretty cute. I think it would have been stronger just having that image (and maybe a little innocuous 'Merry Christmas' in the corner) instead of having a prelude of moaning. That's just sweet.

I think the moaning was meant to amplify the D'AWWW factor of the picture.

I suppose I made some version of this same point in a lot of my Christmas strips, back when I still did those (I haven't in a while). It's not a terribly original or insightful point, I suppose, pointing out that the holiday season has become highly commercialized but within individual families still retains its same old magic. But I still think that's true.

Looking at this strip now, with the benefit of hindsight, I think I could have dispensed with the first panel entirely, just posted the artwork of Ozy and Llewellyn by the fire, and wished everyone a happy holiday season. Holidays aren't something you have to be insightful about and there isn't much new to say about them. I think the artwork is sweet enough to stand on its own.
That which does not kill me, cripples me for life.

Adorableness.
