Actually, I thought the word balloon was necessary so people would understand what was happening. This strip is very cute either way.

The strip is so much better without the bubble. It doesn't really need a joke. Then again, as a completely standalone strip, it wouldn't make much sense without the bubble. So I suppose either way is good.

Hm... that is true. I suppose for syndication it would be better to have the bubble, but the 'silent' version is a much sweeter image.

The speech bubble would probably be best as a caption, really. Keeps the image itself clean while still providing an explanation if needed.

Well, we know Ozy now. This was one of the first year or so of comics. So for new readers character establishment would still be ongoing.
