It's been a while since I've visited here. I didn't care much for the first Raine Dog comic, and recently, for some reason, I read the whole thing. That was a mistake.

Then there was this strip, which was painful to read. The author is clearly ignorant about how insurance works. It's a topic I'm happy to discuss, and there are a lot of improvements which could be made (with much smaller bills). It's so nice that he can dismiss everyone who opposes the bill, that he knows the exact reason for the opposition.

As an international reader from a country with a nationalised health service, how does insurance work (briefly, explain it as you would to a small child)

You pay the insurance company money every month. In return they are suppose to pay for certain medical expenses you have, the details depend on your plan. The trouble is it is far more profitable for insurance companies to find loopholes around paying their end of the deal. They can also refuse to insure you if they think you will have high medical bills in the future.

Actually, I'm pretty certain they can. If you have 'pre-existing conditions' (diabetic, genetic disorders, even high-danger jobs) insurance companies reserve the right to refuse service to anybody, for any reason. (Really, most private institutions reserve the right to refuse service to anybody, for any reason).

This is why the health care proposal to 'eliminate pre-existing conditions' is so popular, especially among the elderly, who commonly have health complications simply because of old age. Not fair? Of course not, but they're private institutions protecting their bottom line, and if there's a high chance that you'll be pressing for payout in the foreseeable future, they will refuse service because they deem you too 'high risk'. A debate about how to make things better rages elsewhere, and in more appropriate places.

Suffice to say that each side has its points concerning the government proposition, and calling one side 'douchebags' because they think the negatives outweigh the positives is ridiculous and needless to say makes you like a douchebag for dismissing it out of hand because you don't agree.

For the record, at the end of the Cold War when the Soviet Union dissolved, Finland found itself in a deep economic depression which was only relieved when they began selling cell phones (Nokia) to the capitalist world.

I remember reading on a different forum that it was supposed to be illegal. I don't know for certain; maybe somebody here might know what the laws actually are. Also, the government already provides free health care for people who are financially wiped out; I know this for a fact.
