Didn't Herman Melville already write the great American Novel with Moby Dick. Seriously, if there's any iconic novel associated with America in the same way Tolstoy's War and Peace is associated with Russia, Victor Hugo's Les Miserables with France or Cervantes' Don Quixote with Spain I think it's Moby Dick.

Moby Dick is possibly the single most boring book ever written. Much more boring than the tale of two cities.

I find it amazing that something can be so honored and yet so reputedly boring as Moby Dick. Maybe I should read it just to see where both perspectives originate.

Au contraire. The single most boring book ever written is Silent Spring by Rachael Carson. It has an important message but the repetition... grah. Its one of the only books that took me more than a day to finish.

I have yet to read the Unabridged Dictionary. Although I did listen to the book on tape, as sung by Yakko Warner.
