Well, I don't live in the UK, and I've never heard of anyone sending their kids to daycare.

I have few good memories of such places! ... I have few memories of such places period. But I know that I didn't particulary enjoy it.

I rather enjoyed the period of my life when I was being childminded after school until my Mum finished work (roughly between the ages of 9 to 13, between when she got a job and when we decided I was old enough for my own key). Although it probably helps to account for my lack of knowledge of mid-90s children's TV shows. Still, messing about with Playdough was far more fun. It also led to my introduction to the Worms series (my childminder's oldest son got a new computer with Worms 2).
