Flood Control in the Chat room

What do you think the ideal number of lines per second should be the limit for the flood control.

Personally I find flooding to be a rude way to interupt a chat room, but I don't want to push my feelings to hard on to you so were having a vote.....

BTW....a great alternative to flooding is to post to a pastebin ( like http://paste.acidchat.net ). And then just pasting the URL the pastbin gives you instead of several lines of text. The url will be something like this:
http://paste.spicylemons.com/view.php?id=91

but what if the particular lines do not pertain to anything requiring pastebin?

the one thing that I've enjoyed about DC the past three years is that we don't have threads getting locked for going off topic, we don't have censors on bad words, and any problems that do occur are dealt with as needed. Either way, #Definecynical has been regared as separate to the extent that it is more lax than the forums. We have never had a flood control, because we've never needed one, and we won't need one in the future.

The way I see it from my eyes is that anything over 5 lines is pastebin material.......I have no problem with flooding since I am connected to the server via gigabit (i see all the lines at once). But for other viewers it interupts the conversation, and they have to wait for the flood of text to stop before they can talk. This can be particularly annoying for people who are not on broadband. Personally I think it is rude to interupt a chat room in such a way. A chat room is for chatting, not posting massive amounts of ASCII art and line after line of old converstaions. A simple link to those items will allow users to view them at there convience without a rude interuption in the conversation.

I agree about not wanting to censor. Infact I am not a part of anything that censors me. I am not trying to censor here, or limit what you can post. I am just saying there are better way s to post that content that is not so rude to the other chatters. I want to keep the chan as a free and open place for discussion.

I hate forcing my beliefs on others....that is why we have a poll to see what you guys/gals think. I will do what ever you want.......I don't want to seem or be a harsh dictator, which is why I am letting you guys decide. But it is something that always has and always will get on my nerves.

still, there is a difference between somebody posting a massive flood of text and posting 6 lines of text with relevancy. If you don't like massive floods harming low-speed users, take it up with shadow :P

First of all, is it a problem that needs fixing?

Other than that, my personal belief is to always err on the least intrusive control in matters like these - that is, if it is a problem, do the least that is necessary to control it, and no more.

But yeah, I agree, that stuff like flooding does get on my nerves. 10 lines in 5 seconds seems about the most a single person would really have reason to post to me, some people type fast - any more than that though, and they'd probably get kicked by an active mod anyway. If they're typing that much, it's either for a reason, or they're being jerks, in which case they'll be dealt with.

I say we ban Muninn. He's just a nuisance.

If we had to enforce some limit I'd say 10 lines in 5 seconds, but I don't really feel we need one.

I don't really think we need one, but 10 in 5 is the best option if one must be set up.

I agree with the flood controls. If you want to send long lists of text, send a link or something, I don't like reading all that in the IRC.

Plus...it's sort of rude, it's like going "STOP EVERYTHING! I HAVE STUFF FOR YOU TO READ!"

Well it looks like a lot agree with me that there should be some flood control. I went ahead and set it to 6 lines in 5 seconds = kick....5 flood kicks = ban....

That is one more line than the poll option that got the most votes. So lets see how this goes. If it is too strict talk to me about it on IRC and if it looks like people don't like it we can make it 10 lines in 5 seconds......

Your always welcome to talk to me about anything, I always have an ear open :-)
