like AIM specifically built for always running chat rooms.
If you've done things right, people won't be sure if you've done anything at all.

There should really be a stickied thread about this.

I prefer mIRC, partly because it has the best scripting and plugin capabilities of any client out there and I really like that stuff. Hell, I even use it under Linux using WINE (Khaled needs to make a native port :(). But mIRC also has plenty of feature goodness for those who can't be arsed to script their own.

The only other clients I've tried to use are Trillian's and Gaim's IRC clients and they don't impress me. In fact they both suck in their own ways (Gaim's doesn't support IRC over SSH, which I need here, and Trillian's has a couple bugs including one really annoying show-stopper I found in the first 5-minutes I tried it). Besides Trillian and Gaim weren't made for IRC anyways.

There are also a couple of CGI-based and Java based clients but those are usually locked to specific server(s) by the webmaster which hosts them (we should get one of those). They're usually only basic features too, although they're getting better.

I definitely recommend a stand-alone client. mIRC, in fact. :P

Also for future reference, it helps if you READ error messages, because it probably told you you didn't have an application which handled the IRC protocol.B

Sometimes there can be 20 people logged on, and only 1 or none actually looking at the window. T'others are probably playing WOW or SL or something.

If nobody said anything at all, it's because they were all ghosts. We do that sometimes, especially when it's late at night in our time zone. And SOME people stay logged in 24/7 for no reason and are never really there.

To add my own contribution to this thread, another option connectionwise is to download the ChatZilla extension for Firefox. If you have Firefox. I use it when I go online from the Mac in the office, since I didn't have to have admin privileges to install it. I have to log the chat periodically, though, and it only saves as HTML files.3
