At least, I noticed that earlier today when copying an article over in Weird News.

U+2018 (single left), U+2019 (single right), U+201C (double left), and U+201D (double right).

They're in the Unicode specification, all right. They're not Windows proprietary at all....

Then how come they only show up correctly when viewing in something made by Microsoft?

Oh, I've got them to work in Linux. Which is 100% non-Microsoft, unless you actually go and download their core fonts (Arial, Tahoma, Times New Roman, etc.)

Weird, everytime I send an email (from MS Outlook), the recipient sees gibberish unless they're using Outlook or Outlook Express. I've seen the same thing on blogs and news postings, the quotation marks get turned into unrecognized aliases or funky unicode symbols. I pretty much gave up on using anything other than straight quotes.

Well, what client are they using? Not all of them are Unicode-compatible. (Unicode is relatively new)

Usually webmail, I tend to notice it when I get a reply and certain characters in my message (darn you Microsoft!) are substituted for something completely different.

Once again, most webmail software can't handle unicode.

Especially if they're written for PHP (which only started being able to handle it in 4.x, and even then, only in selected functions).
