I think I pretty much said it all in the subject. No getting drunk for me though (at least not too much). My last final is tomorrow morning at 8. Talk about bad timing.

We should celebrate by sending all the Mexicans back to their country.

It's the celebration of making your eyes slightly more open!

It is the celebration of a Mexican victory over a Napoleonic French army in a battle in the early 1800's.

In other words, the Mexicans handed the French a buttwhuppin'. Pass the mayonnaise.

Except it's not even a national holiday in Mexico.

I have to wonder why a Mexican holiday so minor to Mexico came to be the best-known Mexican holiday in the U.S. My best guess is that the Spanish name is catchy and easy to say. "Diecinueve de septiembre" just doesn't cut it.

Same reason that St. Patrick's Day is more about drinking than Irish culture.

I agree. We're in the USA, not Mexico, so what's the point of celebrating it? That's like going to Mexico on July 4th, and celebrating the United States's Independence Day. Doesn't make sense either.

It kind of makes sense when you consider that parts of the United States (namely, the southwest) used to be Mexican, and still have strong cultural ties to Mexico. :?
