You know it's a big 'un when you can see the smoke cloud on weather satellite screens

Any reports of deaths?

No deaths yet, I think, and only 39 casualties, 2 of which are serious.

Sorry to be technical about this, but this was actually a fuel depot ( a storage facility ), rather than a refinery . . . and that actually makes matters worse, due to the large amounts of refined hydrocarbons in storage.

I'm remembering a line from one of my disaster response studies: "It's not whether a hydrocarbon facility will explode, but when."

Good to hear there are no fatalities as of yet, let's hope and pray it stays that way.

I saw this on BBC world news yesterday. I think they said there was property damage a quarter mile away from the explosion and it was reported up to ten miles away.

I was surprised this wasn't their top story of the day. That is pretty huge.

That's nothing. Apparantly it was heard in France and Belgium.

...I don't remember hearing it, though. But then, I'm in Blackpool

I wonder how it compares to the Halifax Explosion (way back in WWI)

There are far less deaths, that's for sure.

There were no deaths.

Thank god it happened at 6am on Sunday and not 9am on Monday, otherwise the deathtoll would have been in the hundreds. There were offices and major roads nearby.

Ha, I saw this and laughed for about 5 minutes!

It's from SSDD if anyone's interested. It's not always like that, it has anthros in various UK based capers. Best British webcomic IMO
