I thought it was like 4 BC, the reason being astronomers found one of the known comets passing close by Earth which could have been the 'star' the three wise men saw. I might be remembering wrong however.

So there was always something then? I guess that means the number of BMWs in existence was not 0? So either BMWs existed, or there were -1 BMWs, and the world owed the people a BMW.

I think he means it wasn't discovered/formalised yet.

The 4 B.C. figure comes from the fact that King Herod died that year. But historians are not unanimous on it. Estimates range from 6 B.C. to 2 A.D.
