Based on Enterbrain's March sales figures for the Japanese market, Japan's Mainichi newspaper reports that Nintendo sold 380,000 DS Lites during the month and 180,000 original DS handhelds.

Sony tied up second place for the month, selling 150,000 PlayStation Portables and 140,000 PlayStation 2s--strong results for a console that hit the market six years ago.

Sales for March only; still pretty good that Sony took second place with the PS2, considering how late it is in this console cycle.

Yes, but the Gamecube is the successor to the N64. The DS isn't actually the successor to the GBA. The main difference between the DS and the GB line seems to be that the DS doesn't have the same archetecture as the GB and GBC, which is why it can only play GBA games out of the old archive stuff.

But it can still play GBA games. The Gamecube can't play N64 titles.

And PCs can play NES, Mega Drive and c64 games. I fail to see your point here.

My point is that you appear to be arguing that DS is not the successor to GBA because, while the GBA can play classic GB games, the DS can't. And I'm responding by pointing out that it isn't a requirement for being a successor to another system (by using GC and N64 as an example).

The Nintendo handheld series is odd, since it's not a series, but rather multiple lines. (Whereas Nintendo consoles are a series of successors)

So, you have the Gameboy, GBC, GBA (And GBA:SP which I do not count as anything other than a face-lift for the GBA, same with the slimline GBA thing). However, you've also got the Virtual Boy and the DS. Neither of which are within the succession line of GB/GBC/GBA/NextGB. A 'third tier', as I believe Nintendo are calling the DS.

While it was poorly phrased when the point was initially made, (and I myself was only stating why the DS is not considered a gameboy, not not considered the successor to the gameboy), the DS is not the successor to the GBA because Nintendo are still supporting the GBA in an active, rather than a 'there are still a few titles for it we haven't released', way (case in point - the new slimline one that can be operated in one hand)

If the DS is a successor to anything, it's the successor to the Virtual Boy.

So - summary - the DS isn't a gameboy because it can't play GB and GBC titles (by current best-guess definitions of what it means to be a gameboy), but that doesn't mean it's not a successor to the GBA. It isn't a successor to the GBA because the GBA is still officially being supported in an active way rather than a passive way (technically, of course, Nintendo still support the NES. I believe you can purchase replacement components for the NES directly from Nntendo)

I have not an opinion or bias on this issue because I do not own one of the above systems. The Rutebega Child Advanced has always been good enough for me.

Ok, time to clear this up. Note the names of the GBA and the DS. Game Boy Advance. Nintendo DS. Notice something? The Nintendo DS doesn't have the Game Boy name, used since the first one. Nintendo has never said the DS is a part of the Game Boy line. That's why the DS is not a Game Boy, and the GBA is still current-gen.

On another note, The DS is the fastest system to sell 5 million units. Handheld, console, all of them. It even beat out the PS2.
