Benoit Mandelbrot, founder of fractal mathematics, died of pancreatic cancer on 14th October 2010 aged 85. He is probably best known for the eponymous set, and the fractal image which it generates. His work greatly improved our understanding of these fractal objects (a term he coined), enabling us to model the great complexities of coastlines and cabbages using simple mathematical rules.
