Presidential turkey pardons

Postby Tom Flapwell » Wed Nov 21, 2007 4:29 pm

Saw a newspaper photo today of Bush doing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey pardon. One thing that comes to mind: Well, at least he'll remove somebody's death sentence.

But putting aside this particular president, does the tradition strike you guys as silly? Far be it from me to object to an innocent animal not getting killed, but as a gesture, it seems meaningless. More often than not, the same president is going to eat another turkey for Thanksgiving. The pardoned turkey, I'm sure, is chosen at random, not for being the most well-behaved or even the most photogenic.

Also, doesn't "pardon" imply that the turkey has been charged with an offense? Is it pardoned for happening to be a turkey?

I can just see it now

"You're charged with being a turkey on a sunny day!"
"Gobble gobble but it was overcast!"
"The american justice system is never wrong!"
That which does not kill me, cripples me for life.

It's not Foghorn Leghorn being a Turkey, it's Foghorn Leghorn explaining about the turkey.

Nice boy, but he doesn't listen to a thing you say.

PRESIDENTIAL TURKEY PARDONS.

SERIOUS BUSINESS.
Who sleeps shall awake, greeting the shadows from the sun
Who sleeps shall awake, looking through the window of our lives
Waiting for the moment to arrive...
Show us the silence in the rise,
So that we may someday understand...

Finally it all makes sense... The stuffing... The mashed potatoes... The candied yams (yum!)... I guess its the yearly drowning of the turkeys. However, as it would seem our benevolent leader has opted to spare one of their poor souls. One things one my mind... I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A PRESIDENTIAL TURKEY PARDON UNTIL THIS YEAR! And frankly I'm just confused...
