Tell him to publish a paper on it. Formal verification is not something I know how to do properly.

WWYDI you were going to a convention in another country, and forgot your documents for the border crossing?

(Assumption: there are documents that are required, like two pieces of ID, or a passport)

I'd throw just enough of a fit to get myself taken into custody, but not enough to get myself shot. I would then immediately ask to speak to the American Consulate. (I know how to say "I am an American citizen, please take me to the American Consulate" in twelve languages.)
