Msj told me to let everyone know that her computer is going to the doctor and won't be on for a while. . Aperantly one of her cd drives is not reading cd's. She has a compaq though so it realy should have been expected.

ewww... compaq.

I had *two* compaq laptops (identical models) I won in a sweepstakes last summer. Both had motherboard failures recently.

I'm going to put them both on e-bay as "parts" systems once I've finished data recovery.

Compaq and e-machines are the worst... don't get them if you can avoid them. Sorry about the drive, Msj.

Sorry about the CD failure. In a way I'm sorta glad for my "Frankenstein" system. A Frankenstein system is one that is not made by any particular company. I built this little monster myself. The only problem is if I find myself yelling at Tech support, I find that I'm yelling at myself! (grin)
Mine started as a 286 (leading edge model D) running at 12 Mhz. I bought it 8 years ago. Since then I've gradually replaced every component in the system. The floppy drive lasted until last year. Now it's a 1 gigHz athalon, 512 meg ram, 16 gig hd, 120 gig Hd, Dvd drive, Sony CD burner, 6 inch diameter cooling fan built in the side case, and a 19 inch monitor. In the semi near future I'm planning another upgrade to a 2 Gighz athalon cpu. It's an ongoing project. Sure I've spent more money on it over the years than if I bought it from a store but what I've learned is invaluable. I call the thing "Tigger" because has a tendency to defy logic, reason and possibly a law of physics! Namely cause and effect.(chuckle)

Did you think I was kidding about the cooling fan? Please excuse the mess.

wow... now that fan is really impressive! is that a fork on top of the case!?!?! and at least three used cigarettes on the floor, a bagie tie(?), morrowind, other un-namable cd's... a jar of salsa! ... wow, your room is worse than mine!

I can't see but do you still have the 5x5 in flopy drive?

Those things were awsome!

Foxchild- You are close on a number of items, The ink cartridge is for my 656C Deskjet printer, the "Bagie Tie" is my phone cord (My phone has lighting Neon in it), correct on the Morrowind, the jar was "Marretas french dressing /blue cheese chunks"(never again). Yes that is a fork on the case. I'm sorry to report that the ash tray had a spillage situation when the picture was taken. The unameable CD with the superman picture is a "Superfriends" Music CD. Contains the music from the animated origonal as well as the later version, and a remixed version and other misc music.

Norsenerd- No I don't have a 5 1/4" floppy in it. Got it sitting around the apartment waiting to be reinstalled.

I am actively working on cleaning the apartment (chuckle). This reaction kinda reminds me of when I sent some pics of my I-cybie to my parents who e-mailed me back with the reply "It's cute. Can it be taught to clean up your room?"

Sigh.
