And now, a message from The Mysterious Future! Shorah b'shemtee, Though I only arrived here recently, I wanted to let you know that I'll be leaving for a few days on Wednesday for Thanksgiving break. I should be back to some degree by Saturday. But don't expect much from me then. Finals are coming up for me, so my activity will be severely decreased until Dec. 10th at the latest. I'll try to at least update the Crypto thread, but I'll be pretty much dormant other than that. The Fissure awaits...

How can you use a 10% margin of error? I believe margins of error are simply errors in the counting process. You can't use one, but you can estimate the margin that you might have acquired.

You can't use one, but you can estimate the margin that you might have acquired. </td></tr></table>  so, this question is properly answered by the feild of statistics. my stats background is slightly rusty, but i think i've remebered the sailent points. in a survay, the standard deviation (i'm assuming margin of error and uncertainty mean this, since they usually do) is actually determined solely by the number of peopel you survay. this is a mathematical measure of the likelyhood of the group you polled representing the total population. in real-wrold survays, there can be other sources of uncertianty (eg. the infamous butterfly ballets in floridia in the 2000 usa presidental election). these procedurual uncertaintys need to be taken into account when reporting the actuall levels of uncertainties, but the fun part is that they often do have to be estimated. i'd guess that most survay results that the public sees (in newspapers for example) include only the mathematical uncertainties in their reported errors, but htat's just a guess on my part. and so the idea of 'using' a margin of error is just sloppy phrasing for 'we conductied this survay such that we would have a 10%moe. ' which is to say 'we polled sufficent people to have a 10% moe' (edited to finish my sentance. wheee for forgetting that i hadn't finished the post) (edited a second time b/c i forgot a point....)

Margins of error appear when a population is not completely sampled. They simply reflect the reliability of the data sample and how far off it could possibly be. The quality of the sample depends on sampling, and sometimes samples are made larger or smaller based on convenience, the ability to gather the data, and the amount of precision desired in making an estimate. The field of statistics has many ways of calculating the relationships between population size, sample size, and the deviations between them.
