It's weird how I would think of molybdenite (MoS2) before of the actual element molybdenum itself.

Hey I forgot about the Pokemon thing! And that makes sense because cinnabar is a mineral commonly found in places with volcanic activity.

Huh. I do wonder if it's just a happy coincidence, or if they actually were being smart. Because, all of the towns in Generation I are named after colors (except for Pallet Town), and Cinnabar is a color as well as a mineral ore found near volcanoes... were they intentionally being clever, as Angela suggested? If so, then they were being MORE CLEVER than the original Japanese version of the game, in which Cinnabar Island is called Guren Jima, which (correct me if I'm wrong) just means Crimson Island.
