How can I be a furry? Do I have to just pick an animal I like and be like them? I like dogs and cats and rabbits and hamsters and stuff.

For a fursona, choosing one that best suits your personality is what I (and check me if I'm wrong) and most people did. As for the parameters of your interests in furry stuff, such as art, video games, comics, and the ilk, are up to you entirley. Just go with what you like man.:D And that's my advice.

You can find an official furry certificate at your nearest Walgreens or post office.

My thoughts exactly. Dangit you beat me to it!

And you don't even necessarily even need to act like your fursona either... sometimes a fursona is more like a buddy icon, sorta like a picture ID, what people know you by and what they picture you as on the forum, that sort of thing.

But if you do want to "act" like your furry, (roleplaying) you can feel free to do that to. Basically it's up to you. :D

(i feel completly unhelpful... I give him all this advice and then say, "It's up to you. )

How can I be a furry?
If you have to ask, you're approaching it wrong.

It's your job to decide if you're a furry or not; if you decide to become one, how you express it (and even if you express it at all) is your decision.

That being said, I can offer some pointers:

Do you like furry stuff? If so, is it because it is furry, because of other reasons where its being furry is icing on the cake, or does its furriness not factor into it? Depending on how you answer these questions, you may decide to make yourself a furry, or not.

If you decide to declare yourself a furry, do you feel creating an anthropomorphic animal to represent you (i.e. a "fursona") is necessary (not everyone does)? If you do, think about how you would describe it: what animal(s) do you feel best represent you? To what extent? Are you describing yourself as you are, as you'd like to be, or as an alter ego you'd be willing to try on occasionally?

Don't be afraid to mix and match, or try some on in the dressing room. *points to the small booth off to the side*

If it doesn't fit, feel free to try something else. Make something up if you like. Then, once you found something to suit you, go ahead and flesh it out. Or don't. It's really your call.

you gotta like, go out to the store and buy some stuffed animals and like play with them with your mouth and weird crap like that. I think you gotta hand make a costume that looks like a lion or something and have sex in it. I think that's how. I guess it's like some really messed up fraternity but you never get out of the hazing.

Plus furries aren't allowed here, they usually get banned.

Legendary Thread Award!

EDIT: Niner has a valid poiunt about the whole furry thing, considering your relatively young age. Generally from my experiences your first furry form is almost a carbon copy [albeit a color-altered version] of a certain video game character.

Sonic the Hedgehog [and his related friends], Starfox, and Pokemon [among others] are good examples of this.

Really, furry is what you make it to be. If you think a furry is being a person who runs around in a fox costume or something, and you think that makes you a furry, then you're a furry. If you think a furry is a person who's a fan of cartoons and such, and you like that stuff, you're a furry.

Like I said, it's really ambiguous as to what it means.
