I have a feeling making it less cartoony will hurt it.

I don't get it. The 2 seconds of video we see look exactly like Sonic Rush, to be honest. Hopefully since Sonic Rush was actually a good game (minus some of the gimmicky 3D boss fights), this won't disappoint.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving is not for you.
