One thing glares out at me. Analysists (Analysis is the branch of math that is most interested in computions) really only work with aproximations for the most part. They can get in whatever desired eror but they still use aproximations. It's very had to get something exact but its usal easy to get arbitraraly close.

Also the axioms are easy to acept. Have you heard about the axiom of choice, the well ordered principle, and zorns lema. The interplay is an interesting study of this? Also 1+1=2 is not an axiom it's a definition.

(i've just come from far too many consecutive hrs of math hw, precieded by far too many nearly consecutive hrs of the same homework set, so i'm a bit saturated on math proofs) while i've been working on this hw set, i've been thinking about this discussion, and i htink i've almost got my ideas more clarified to myself- i dont' think i was first typing what i really htoguht, plus you two have managed to purswade me on a few points, but htere's others that i'm staying firm on. (i realy do wish we could have this discussion in real time, in person, it'd be so much more fun *pout* oh well)

(and norsenerd- i just plucked that example from thin air, as being a theory that most ppl would have heard of)

norsenerd- thanks for clarifying my statement about axioms

nevermind, i'll elaborate now:
math and physics aren't the same, jsut very clostly related- eg its really hard to do much physics w/o math. physics is math plus aplilcations. that's not to say that phsyics research is like, but thats sorta what learnign physics is like. maybe thats just my mindset.... but thats why i think a solid math background is a must for any scientist. and i do think all hard sciences eventually come down to physics, which is why i think a good physics background is also important for any scientist. with some sciences- eg neurobiology- the raw physics is hidden behind many layers of aproxemations b/c we don't yet have the accumulated knowledge to see it all. an example of the opposite- structor can be caluculated for some protiens based upon knowledge of what atoms, how many of them, electron configureations etc., and i say thats all physics (well, yes, its chemistry too, but see, chemistry is just physics also, but ...).... hmm, maybe i shoudl go take that nap before any more attempts at rational thought

Y'know.. on a freakish coincidence, I saw "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" this morning... okay, the last minute or so of it.. anyway, someone was asking Will this exact question and responded "Yeah, of course!"... then as the teacher watches him, he gets all uncomfortable and says "I mean no!".. he eventually starts rambling... "What if it falls on a (I forget what animal he said.. gerbil? doesn't sound right..)" "Does it count if the gerbil makes the noise?"

Anyway...
