Now that I think about it I hear the phrase "that's homosexual" instead which somehow results in being less offensive than "that's gay". I didn't see this alternate version mentioned in this topic, is it not used over there?

I've never heard that phrase, apart from being used to make fun of the use of 'gay' in that context.

I think saying "thats homosexual" would be more offensive.

I mostly heard that used in this context:

Guy: That's gay
Doog: It's what?
Guy: Gay.
Doog It's what?
Guy: It's homosexual.
Doog: ...forget it. you're a dick.

I'm not offended. Seems that 'faggot' is the homosexual-specific insult to use nowadays. Apart from 'homosexual,' I hear 'gay' used only as a catch-all negative descriptor, never as an insult.

Quoted. Although I am somewhat forgiven since "retarded" is a very Boston-area thing to say, and is not considered as offensive as it is pretty much everywhere else.

I used to get so angry when people said 'retarded' to describe something they disliked. Now I don't care and even use it myself sometimes.

I use it to imply homosexual traits of things, eg;

A pink shirt = "that shirt's pretty gay"
Someone leaves the pub early = "aww, you big fat gay"

I couldn't give two shytes if some people find it offensive, I'm not saying it to them and I wouldn't, just like I wouldn't call a black person I didn't know a nigger. I use it ironically, because it's funny and because it's taboo to say.

If people don't get that, then they're probably either not British or a big Emo.
