Human voice doesn't mean all that much to me in the end, except in rare cases. I've heard instrumentals that express more emotion than vocals and lyrics ever could, really.
Who sleeps shall awake, greeting the shadows from the sun
Who sleeps shall awake, looking through the window of our lives
Waiting for the moment to arrive...
Show us the silence in the rise,
So that we may someday understand...

I like the sound that the human voice makes, especially in languages like Russian.
Anything Gaelic or Irish.
That's also pretty sexy. Scottish accents are wonderful too.

It's quite rare that I listen to music without lyrics, even - it doesn't really speak to me or entertain me in the same way.
Same here. Although I sometimes like songs with foreign lyrics too.

Depending on the song, the singing may just be a deliberate sort of background noise, or the lyrics might be intentionally pronounced. An example of the latter is Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction", considered the first major protest song. In it, he sings the lyrics very emphatically and clearly.

As an example of both components working perfectly together, I just got Peter Gabriel's Up and was blown away by how good it is.

Ha ha ha what? I don't know if you mean "major" as in first one to make an impact on the music charts (though that would be wrong too) but it's very much not the first protest song.

I would at least think We Shall Overcome... and of course protest songs were around long before that one too.

Pretty much any music to come out of Ireland post-1700 are protest songs

I meant the first 1960's protest song on the radio. Sorry. "We Shall Overcome" I never remember hearing on the radio, except as parts of news reports.

The most important thing about music is whether or not the band name has the word Dream in it.
