In semi-related news, my car got a record 30.57 miles per gallon on my trip to Pittsburg this weekend!

And, I'm contemplating getting a diesel truck for wintertime instead of gasoline, since there's about a 50-cent difference per gallon in the price of the two.

Most diesel vehicles are gas guzzlers that carry massive tanks that hold far more fuel than any car would... most cars top out at 18 gallon tanks... pickups, SUVs, vans, and some [mostly smaller] school buses are 20-40 gallons... larger trucks and most school buses have anywhere from 40-100 gallons... and 18-wheeled semis have at least one 100-120 gallon tank, sometimes two.

Most of the nation's semis and large trucks run on it. I've seen small vehicles run on the stuff, but nothing American or Japan made... mostly European cars like Volkswagen.

Yes, diesel is considerably cheaper right now, but I can remember just a couple of months ago diesel was more expensive than gas. Diesel prices don't tend to be quite as flexible as gas prices are.

I'm planning to buy a large truck soon so I don't get stuck in multiple feet of snow & ice, so diesel is a viable option for that vehicle (2000 Dodge Ram 2500). I'll have to chat with some of my mechanic friends, but I just might do that

[daydreams of his future redneck truck]

Hmm, gas prices around here in Houston were around $1.89/gal. for a few weeks. And now my local gas station price is $1.83/gal. And the gas price for another gas station near me has also gone down.
Is there a possibility there will be a nation-wide decrease in the costs of gas? Let's hope so.

I wouldn't want to drive a diesel truck in the snow/ice, because diesel engines create lots of torque, and that's kinda bad in slippery conditions. (I have a Camaro, so I know the whole torque + RWD + light back end = bad by personal experience! =P)

But at least you went with Dodge, I prefer their trucks over the other two domestic truck makers. Dodge's new Cummins "600" diesels are very, very powerful, and also suprisingly quiet. They make 600 Ft. Lbs. of torque at only 1600 RPM! That's something I wouldn't take out in the snow. (unless I had a proper lift and meaty tires) Of course that's their brand new ones that came in 2004, not 2000.

I would personally get something along the lines of a Subaru, because of the AWD capabilities, but a truck with some meaty treads on them should suffice as a winter driver.

AWD is useless to me because not only do I have to drive in severe snow, I have to go off-roading in severe snow to get to many of my clients. A serious off-roader with plenty of ground clearance, and a full-size pickup truck is my preferred base vehicle. I just hope I can afford it and the necessary modifications in time...

People always complain about people using trucks when they have no need to go off-road. At least you legitimately need it, Felix, so no one can fault you for it.

Unleaded is $2.01 at the cheapest around here.

*Insert shock and awe here* I saw a gas station selling regular gas for $1.97 in Danvers down the street from my afternoon workplace... too bad that's a good 35-40 minute drive from my apartment... Two days ago I filled it up at the same place for $1.99...

I filled up my Integra yesterday at $1.78/gallon for the cheap unleaded stuff.

I also test-drove another big pickup truck today, I want it! Of course, it had the sport package, which just seems silly to me on a pickup truck that weighs over 4,000 pounds, but it was basically the same as what I want.

[makes engine noises and plays with his computer's racing wheel]

$1.78? Lucky you. It's still over $2 for the cheap stuff where I live. At least it was last time I tanked up, last Wednesday.
The average price around the specific area of town I live in now is about $1.85. There's also a couple of $1.83's. So I guess it isn't that much more expensive. But still, you can't forget the days where $1.30 seemed like a lot. (Not too long ago, actually, I think it was 2001 or 2002, when the democrats had an investigation on the gas prices and stuff.)
