I personally use Amarok on my computer and Rockbox on my iAudio X5 with a custom automatic rsync script because I'm a great big geek. If you're happy with iTunes, Jack, use iTunes. (Although, perhaps trying foobar2000 wouldn't hurt
iTunes sucks because they said so

You are quite welcome to use iTunes, Jack. Don't let me stop you. I will never use it, partially because I rarely use Windows and partially because it is crippled compared to most other media players (also, as Jason said, it installs a bunch of crap, of which I already have too much on my Windows partition). Obviously, though, iPods work best with iTunes; but seeing as I'll never own an iPod either (I have a lot of music in OGG format) that doesn't bother me in the slightest.

If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. (Revelation 2:5, NIV)

The only thing other than iTunes I've installed from its update prompts is Quick Time. Like it was said, you can deny the download if you want and uninstall if you prefer. Problem solved on that account.
Trying something else for me seems unnecessary because what I got ain't broke. Something else might have better looking and more intelligent features but that's really cosmetic advantages. iTunes is simple and easy to organise for me.
Backing up isn't a problem to me either. 98% of songs I have are on CD. I rarely get songs online legally or illegally. So far the only ones I got that way are a few Neil Cicierega and Kray Van Kirk songs.

lol, in the 5th grade we would get in groups of like 5 kids, and each group would be assigned a book that we would read, and twice a week we would discuss it. I remember one time, when it was my group's off day, a kid in another group got in a rant like:
OMFG? WTF IS WITH SAYING CRAP? CRAP IS GOOD? CRAP IS BAD? CRAP IS POOP! I DON'T GET IT
pants jesus
